27 Ways to Access Scientific Research
A complete guide to finding, reading, and evaluating scientific papers — and knowing what questions matter before you trust the findings.
We are living through a strange moment in the history of knowledge. More information is available to more people than at any point in human history, and yet the feeling of not knowing what to believe has never been more widespread. Studies get published on Monday and debunked by Thursday. Experts contradict each other with matching credentials and matching confidence. A headline announces a breakthrough; the fine print, buried three paragraphs down, reveals it was a study of fourteen mice. Somewhere in your feed right now, someone is citing “research” to support something that research does not actually support.
The problem isn’t a shortage of information. It’s that most of us were never taught to navigate it at the level where it originates.
Academic and scientific papers are where claims about the world are supposed to get tested. Where hypotheses meet methodology, where evidence gets weighed against competing explanations, where researchers have to show their work in a way that other researchers can scrutinize. The system is imperfect, sometimes deeply so, but it’s also the most rigorous process we have for building reliable knowledge. Understanding how it works, what it can and can’t tell you, and how to read the outputs for yourself is one of the most practically useful things you can learn.
The good news is that you don’t need a PhD to do it. You just need a map.
Why Go to the Source?
When a study gets published, a long game of telephone begins. A researcher submits findings. A journal publishes them. A press release simplifies them. A journalist summarizes the press release. An aggregator rewrites the article. Someone screenshots the headline and posts it without the link. By the time a finding reaches your feed, it can look like settled fact while bearing only a loose resemblance to what the original research actually showed.
Primary sources contain information that every layer of translation tends to lose: the sample size, the methodology, the funding source, the limitations the researchers themselves acknowledged, the population the study actually examined. These details change everything. A drug that reduced symptoms in 40 college-aged men in a controlled lab setting is a meaningfully different story than one tested across 10,000 diverse participants over five years. The headline rarely tells you which one you’re reading.
Reading a paper directly doesn’t fully remove you from the problem of trust, though. It relocates it. The study was still designed by someone, analyzed within a particular set of incentives, and perhaps written up with a conclusion already in mind. What gets studied in the first place, which findings get emphasized, how results are framed in the abstract versus buried in the limitations: all of that happens before you open the document. Reading primary sources gives you closer access to the evidence, but understanding the forces that shaped that evidence is where real research literacy begins.
What “Peer-Reviewed” Actually Means
“Peer-reviewed” is often treated as a synonym for “true,” but that’s not necessarily the case.
When a paper is submitted to a journal, it’s sent to other experts in the field for evaluation. Reviewers assess the methodology, the logic connecting the data to the conclusions, and whether the findings are accurately represented. It’s the best system we have for vetting research at scale, and it filters out a significant amount of bad work. It doesn’t guarantee that a study is correct; it guarantees that qualified people looked at it and found it credible enough to publish. Reviewers don’t re-run the experiments. They assess the paper itself.
High-profile journals have published studies that later failed to replicate, were retracted for data problems, or turned out to be significantly overstated. The replication crisis made this visible in a way that shook several fields. In 2015, the Open Science Collaboration published results from a systematic effort to reproduce 100 landmark psychology studies — a project that had been underway since 2011 — and found that a striking number simply didn’t hold up under independent testing. The results made headlines and brought wider public attention to problems that researchers in several fields had been grappling with for years. The original studies weren’t necessarily fraudulent. They were often small, statistically underpowered, or conducted under conditions too specific to generalize. Nutrition science has a particularly troubled replication record. So does much of early social psychology.
Peer review is the floor, not the ceiling. Whether a finding replicates, whether subsequent research supports or contradicts it, whether the people who funded it had a stake in the outcome: those are separate questions, and they matter just as much.
The Funding Question: Why It Shapes Everything
Funding shapes research at every level, including levels that are nearly invisible, and understanding this changes how you read everything.
The obvious version of funding bias is direct influence: a pharmaceutical company funds a trial on its own drug and the results come back favorable. The subtler version is more pervasive and harder to catch. Funding influences which questions get asked in the first place. A sugar industry group doesn’t need to falsify data to reshape the scientific landscape; it just needs to fund decades of studies focused on dietary fat instead of sugar, until fat becomes the villain and sugar escapes scrutiny. That’s documented history. In 2016, researchers uncovered internal sugar industry documents from the 1960s showing that the industry had paid scientists to shift blame for heart disease away from sugar and toward fat, a redirection that shaped public health guidance for a generation.
Funding also creates publication bias, the well-documented phenomenon in which positive results are far more likely to be published than null or negative ones. If a company funds ten studies on its product and eight show no effect, those eight may never be submitted for publication. The two positive ones get published. The literature then reflects a reality the full body of evidence doesn’t support, and anyone reading only published research has no way of knowing what’s missing.
Beyond that, funding shapes framing: which outcomes get measured, which populations get studied, how findings get contextualized in the discussion section, which numbers appear in the abstract and which ones get buried in supplementary tables. None of this requires bad faith from the researchers themselves. It can happen entirely through structural incentives, with everyone acting in what they believe is good faith.
Checking Who Funded a Study
Funding disclosure section. Found at the end of most papers, just before or after the references, sometimes in sections labeled “Funding,” “Acknowledgments,” or “Competing Interests.” Read it before the abstract, not after — because once you’ve read the abstract, you’ve already encountered the findings framed the way the researchers chose to frame them. Knowing who funded the study before you meet the claims lets you bring the right skepticism to the right moment, rather than discovering a potential conflict of interest after you’ve already been nudged toward a conclusion.
Conflict of interest statement. Separate from funding, this is where authors disclose personal financial ties to entities that might benefit from the research: stock ownership, consulting fees, speaking honoraria, advisory board positions. A disclosed conflict still exists. Transparency about it doesn’t neutralize it.
Search the funder independently. If you don’t recognize a funding organization, look it up. Is it a federal agency, a university, a nonprofit with transparent donors, or an industry trade group with a neutral-sounding name? Two minutes of searching can completely reframe what you’re reading.
NIH Reporter — For U.S. federally funded biomedical research, this free public database lets you search grants by researcher, institution, or topic and see exactly how much money went where and from which agency.
Search the lead author’s name alongside terms like “consulting,” “advisory board,” or the name of a relevant company. This can surface financial relationships that predate the current study. Disclosure requirements vary by journal and can only capture what’s voluntarily reported.
How to Read a Paper
Scientific papers follow a standard structure. Once you know it, you can navigate one without reading the whole thing from start to finish, and you know exactly where to look for what you actually need.
Abstract
The compressed version of the paper's argument — what was studied, what was found, what the researchers concluded. It's a useful orientation, not a destination. Abstracts are written under strict word limits, which means the qualifications, the caveats, and the contextual details that change how a finding should be read almost always live elsewhere in the paper.
Introduction
The research question and the existing literature it builds on. This section reveals the researchers' framing from the outset: which prior work they're building on, which competing views they engage with, and whether they're addressing those views at their strongest or positioning against a weakened version that's easier to dismiss. That is called a strawman — a version of the opposing view that has been simplified or narrowed, whether intentionally or not, to a form that's easier to refute than the strongest version of the argument actually is. A paper built on a strawman can appear more decisive than the evidence warrants.
Methods
The section that contains the most consequential information in the paper. This is where you find out who was studied, how many of them, how they were selected, what was measured, and how the data was analyzed. Methodology determines what a study can and can’t tell you, regardless of how confident the conclusions sound. If the methods section is vague or difficult to follow, that is itself informative.
Results
What the data actually showed. A result can be statistically significant — meaning it’s unlikely to be due to chance, typically expressed as a p-value below an arbitrary 0.05 threshold — and still be practically meaningless if the effect size is tiny. Effect size is the measure of how large a difference or relationship actually is, as opposed to merely whether one exists. A drug that reduces symptoms by 2% in a study of 50,000 people might produce a technically significant p-value while offering negligible real-world benefit. The size of an effect, and whether it would matter outside of a controlled setting, is a different question from whether the effect is real.
Discussion
Where the researchers interpret their findings. The discussion section has more interpretive latitude than the results section, and it’s where over-claiming most often lives — so watch for conclusions that go further than the data supports, or for language that hedges carefully in the results section but asserts confidently here. This section also contains the most useful caveats about what the study can and can’t claim.
Limitations
Many papers include an explicit limitations section; if they don't, look for it embedded in the discussion. Rigorous researchers name exactly what their study can't claim: which populations it doesn't generalize to, what confounds they couldn't control for, what follow-up work the findings call for. A paper with no apparent awareness of its own limitations is worth reading skeptically — every study has constraints, and not naming them is itself a choice.
References
Scanning the citations tells you whether the paper engages with the full body of literature on a topic or selectively cites work aligned with its conclusions. A researcher who only cites supportive studies may be presenting a manufactured consensus in a field that's actually contested — and the reference list is the only place that's visible.
The Information Literacy Checklist
These are the questions that cut across every paper, regardless of field or topic — the same ones a librarian, a journalist, or a researcher would ask before deciding how much weight to give what they’ve found.
Date. When was it published? Scientific understanding accumulates and revises, and a finding that represented the best available evidence in 1995 may have been substantially complicated or overturned since. This is true in every field and especially acute in fast-moving ones — a nutrition study from thirty years ago, a consensus statement on antidepressants from fifteen years ago, a paper on AI capabilities from two years ago all carry the same risk: the conversation may have moved on without the citation.
Journal reputation. Where was it published? High-impact peer-reviewed journals tend to be more selective — they reject a higher proportion of submissions and often subject papers to more rounds of scrutiny before acceptance. That selectivity isn't a guarantee of correctness, and some specialist journals have equally rigorous review processes, but placement in a high-impact journal is a meaningful signal worth noting. On the other end of the spectrum are predatory journals: publications that charge authors fees to publish and conduct little or no actual peer review. They're designed to look like legitimate outlets, and the difference isn't always apparent from the name or website alone. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) maintains a vetted index of legitimate open-access journals and is the most reliable current resource for verifying whether a publication is the real thing. Beall's List — a once-widely-used catalog of predatory publishers compiled by librarian Jeffrey Beall — was taken offline in 2017 and is no longer actively maintained, though archived versions circulate.
Sample size and population. How many people were studied, and who were they? A finding from 30 participants carries different weight than one from 3,000. And who those participants were matters as much as how many. Much of foundational medical research was conducted almost exclusively on men and then applied universally. A great deal of psychology research used college students at Western universities as stand-ins for universal human behavior. When you read a study’s conclusions, ask whether the population studied actually resembles the group those conclusions are being applied to.
Study type. How was the research designed? Randomized controlled trials are generally the strongest form of evidence because they can establish causation. Observational studies can show correlation but can’t prove that one thing caused another. Meta-analyses pool findings from multiple studies to look for patterns across a body of literature. Understanding these distinctions helps calibrate how much weight to give any single finding.
Replication. Has this finding been independently reproduced? One study, however well-designed, captures a single set of conditions — a particular population, a particular lab, a particular moment in time. When independent research groups reach the same conclusion using different samples and different methods, that convergence is what transforms a finding into something the field can rely on.
Preregistration. Before collecting data, did the researchers publicly register their hypotheses and methods? Preregistered studies are logged in advance on platforms like the Center for Open Science or ClinicalTrials.gov, committing researchers to their design before they’ve seen the results. This matters because it prevents a common distortion called p-hacking: running multiple analyses until something crosses the significance threshold, then reporting it as if that was always the hypothesis. A preregistered study doesn’t guarantee good science, but its absence in fields where preregistration is standard practice is worth noting.
Preprint or published? Has the paper been through peer review, or is it a preprint — posted publicly before formal vetting? Preprints are common on platforms like arXiv and medRxiv and are valuable for tracking research at the frontier, before the review process catches up. During the early months of COVID-19, preprints circulated widely and were frequently reported as though they carried the same authority as published research. The distinction matters: a preprint is a serious document, not a finished one.
Your Library Card Is More Powerful Than You Think
If you have a library card, you already have access to academic databases that cost institutions hundreds of thousands of dollars a year — databases that are yours to use, from home, right now, for free. Most public library systems subscribe to research databases and make them available to cardholders through their websites, no institutional affiliation required. The specific offerings vary by system, but access commonly includes:
ProQuest — One of the largest aggregators of academic journals, newspapers, dissertations, theses, and reports spanning nearly every field. Particularly strong for business, social sciences, and current periodicals, and one of the few databases that indexes dissertations comprehensively, which matters when you want to find deep, methodologically rigorous work that hasn’t yet made it into journals.
EBSCOhost — A suite of specialized databases covering business, medicine, education, and social sciences. Its flagship product, Academic Search Complete, is one of the broadest interdisciplinary databases available anywhere, indexing thousands of peer-reviewed journals across subjects. EBSCOhost also includes more targeted databases like Business Source Complete, CINAHL for nursing and allied health, and MasterFILE Premier for general reference.
Gale Academic OneFile — Strong for current events, policy research, and general academic literature, with an interface that makes it easier to navigate for readers who aren’t used to academic databases. Gale indexes a wide range of peer-reviewed journals alongside newspapers and magazines, which is useful when you want to track how a research finding moved into public discourse.
JSTOR — Free with library card; limited free access also available without one. A deep archive of academic journals, books, and primary sources, with especially strong coverage in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. JSTOR is less useful for cutting-edge research since most of its content has an embargo period before it’s added, but for anything requiring historical depth or foundational scholarship, it’s unmatched.
University library access goes further still. Students, staff, and sometimes alumni can access the databases below — and many university libraries also offer walk-in access to members of the public, meaning you can use these resources on-site without any institutional affiliation at all.
Web of Science — One of the most authoritative indexes of academic citations, covering tens of thousands of peer-reviewed journals across its core collections. Its citation tracking is particularly rigorous and widely used by researchers evaluating the impact and reception of a body of work.
Scopus — Elsevier’s citation and abstract database, with broader coverage than Web of Science in some areas, particularly sciences and engineering. Scopus and Web of Science are often used together by researchers and librarians conducting comprehensive literature reviews.
PsycINFO — The definitive database for psychology and behavioral science research, maintained by the American Psychological Association, with journal coverage from the 1800s to present and some records dating as far back as the 1600s. If you’re researching anything touching on human behavior, cognition, mental health, or social psychology, PsycINFO goes deeper than any general database.
Embase — A biomedical and pharmacological database with broader international coverage than PubMed, indexing over 8,500 journals from 95 countries. Particularly strong for drug research, clinical medicine, and public health, and essential for systematic reviews that need to capture research published outside the English-language literature.
To find out what your library system offers, go directly to your library’s website and look for a “Research Databases” or “Digital Resources” section. Most systems provide remote access through a simple login with your library card number. And if you need a specific paper your library doesn’t carry, ask a librarian about interlibrary loan — a service available at virtually every library system in the country that can retrieve nearly any published study from another institution’s collection, delivered digitally at no cost to you.
Where to Find the Research
Library databases are the foundation. Beyond them, a broader ecosystem of tools has emerged: some free, some AI-powered, some built specifically around making published research accessible to people outside academia. The landscape has changed considerably in the past few years, and several of these tools have become transformative for anyone trying to do serious reading outside an institutional setting.
AI-Powered Research Tools
Searching academic literature used to mean knowing the exact right keywords and hoping they matched the language a researcher used in 2009. AI-powered tools have changed that by searching for meaning rather than matching strings of text, and by doing interpretive work that used to require reading dozens of papers yourself.
Semantic Scholar — Free resource. Built by the Allen Institute for AI and generates plain-language TLDR summaries for millions of papers, surfacing key findings and tracking how a paper has been received in subsequent research. It also surfaces highly cited papers and identifies influential researchers in a given area, which helps you understand where the intellectual weight in a field actually sits. Useful when you’re trying to get oriented in an unfamiliar subject before deciding which papers to read in full.
Consensus — Free, with a paid tier for additional features. Functions like a search engine for research questions specifically. Type in something like “does magnesium supplementation improve sleep quality” and it synthesizes direct answers from peer-reviewed studies rather than surfacing a list of links. It’s built for evidence-based questions and works best when you want to settle something specific rather than explore a broad area.
Elicit — Free, with a paid tier for higher usage. Searches by meaning rather than exact keywords and extracts specific data points from papers across a results set. If you’re building an argument, writing a report, or trying to compare what multiple studies found on a single variable, Elicit can pull those numbers together without requiring you to open every paper individually.
SciSpace — Free, with paid plans for teams. Pairs paper discovery with an AI that can walk you through a PDF in plain language, highlighting key claims and answering questions about the text as you read. Particularly useful for literature reviews and for navigating papers where the technical vocabulary is specialized enough to warrant a guide alongside the text.
Research Rabbit — Free resource. Rather than searching for papers that match a query, it maps the relationships between papers, showing which studies cited which, how a body of work evolved over time, and which researchers were in conversation with each other. Free Full-Text Access
Research takes many forms and lives in many places: government agencies publish findings directly on public websites, think tanks and NGOs release reports as a matter of mission, and corporate research is often proprietary and never published at all. The access problem is specific to academic journals, which operate on a system that surprises most people when they first encounter it: researchers produce the work for free, peer reviewers evaluate it for free, and commercial publishers sell access to the result — often back to the same universities whose faculty produced it (at prices that can reach tens of thousands of dollars per institutional subscription, with individual articles running $30 to $40 each). The open-access movement emerged as a direct response, and a growing share of academic research is now legally available without a subscription: through author-posted versions, institutional repositories, and dedicated open-access platforms.
Google Scholar — It’s where most people start, and for good reason. It’s fast, it’s free, it indexes an enormous range of academic literature across every discipline, and it requires no account or subscription to use. A search that would take hours across multiple specialized databases often returns useful results in seconds. Scholar also surfaces citation counts, which give a rough sense of how widely a paper has been read and referenced, and its “Cited by” feature lets you trace forward in time to see which papers built on a given study. For a first pass at any research question, it’s hard to beat.
Its limitations are real, though. Google Scholar doesn’t consistently tell you whether a paper is peer-reviewed, and it indexes preprints, theses, conference abstracts, and other non-peer-reviewed work alongside journal articles without clearly distinguishing between them. It also doesn’t give you full-text access to everything it finds; many results link to paywalled journal pages, and the “All versions” link, while sometimes surfacing a free copy, isn’t reliable. Think of Scholar as an exceptionally powerful card catalog: brilliant for discovering what exists and understanding the shape of a field, but only the beginning of the work of actually accessing and evaluating what you find.
CORE — The world’s largest aggregator of open-access research, with over 430 million metadata records drawn from institutional repositories, open-access journals, and research portals around the world. CORE doesn’t host all of those papers itself; it indexes and links to where they legally live, while also hosting tens of millions of full texts directly. If a paper exists somewhere online in an open format, CORE has likely found it.
BASE — The Bielefeld Academic Search Engine, is built and actively curated by librarians at Bielefeld University in Germany, and that provenance matters. Over 60% of its content is open access, and it offers detailed filtering by author, subject, date, and license type that goes beyond what most general search tools provide. Because it’s librarian-maintained rather than algorithmically assembled, there’s a quality consideration baked into the index that pure crawlers don’t have.
DOAJ — The Directory of Open Access Journals is a community-curated directory of legitimate open-access peer-reviewed journals, currently indexing over 21,000 journals across every discipline. It functions both as a search tool and as a verification resource: if a journal you’ve encountered claims to be peer-reviewed and open access, checking whether it’s listed in DOAJ is a fast way to confirm that it’s the real thing rather than a predatory imitation.
Unpaywall —A browser extension that works silently in the background as you browse. When you land on a paywalled paper, it automatically checks open-access repositories, institutional archives, and author pages for a legal free version and surfaces a link if one exists. Install it once and forget about it; it’s one of those tools that pays for itself in the first week.
PubMed and PubMed Central
Two of the most important databases for health, medicine, and life sciences research share a name and are often confused, but they serve different functions.
PubMed — A free search engine maintained by the National Library of Medicine. It indexes over 39 million citations from biomedical and life sciences literature: titles, authors, abstracts, journal information, and links to the original sources. When you search PubMed, you’re searching a catalog. You find records about papers, not always the papers themselves.
PubMed Central — A free full-text archive, a repository where the complete papers actually live. PMC primarily holds research funded by the NIH and other agencies that require open-access deposit as a condition of funding, which means its coverage is extensive for publicly funded science. The practical workflow for anyone doing health or medical research: search PubMed to find what exists, then check whether the paper is available in full text through PMC. A “Free full text” filter in PubMed’s search interface surfaces only papers with open-access versions available, which saves the extra step. For anything you can’t access through PMC, CORE and Unpaywall are the logical next stops.
Specialized Databases
General academic search tools are powerful starting points. Many fields also have dedicated databases built specifically around their literature — tools that search more deeply, index more completely, and filter more precisely than anything designed to cover everything.
arXiv — Free resource. A preprint server where researchers in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, and related fields post papers before formal peer review. A significant share of AI and machine learning research appears on arXiv first, often months before journal publication, which makes it essential for anyone trying to track what’s actually happening at the frontier of those fields rather than what was happening a year ago when papers finally cleared review. The tradeoff is that arXiv papers haven’t been through peer review; treat them as serious and preliminary.
IEEE Xplore — Paid, with some free content. The flagship database of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the authoritative source for peer-reviewed engineering, computer science, and technology research. If arXiv is where cutting-edge work first surfaces, IEEE Xplore is where much of it eventually lands after review. For technical research on AI systems, hardware, communications, and applied computing, this is where the formally vetted work lives.
ERIC — Free resource. The Education Resources Information Center, a database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education that covers the full range of education research: curriculum design, pedagogy, learning science, educational policy, teacher preparation, assessment, and more. It indexes journal articles, conference papers, and reports going back decades, and it’s the first stop for anyone working in or writing about education at any level. Note: As of 2025, ERIC has undergone significant budget cuts that reduced its indexed sources by roughly 45%. The database remains operational and existing records are still searchable, but its ongoing coverage is narrower than it once was. ProQuest and EBSCO both maintain supplemental education indexes that fill some of the gap.
Verification Tools
Finding a paper is only part of the work. What happened to it afterward — whether the scientific community embraced it, challenged it, built on it, or later found it didn’t hold up — is what separates a well-sourced claim from a misleading one. A single study, however impressive, is a starting point, not a verdict. These tools show you where a paper actually stands in the conversation that followed its publication.
Scite.ai — Free basic access, paid for full features. It does something that most databases don’t attempt: it analyzes the full text of papers that have cited a given study and classifies each citation as supporting, contradicting, or simply mentioning the original finding. A paper that has been cited 200 times looks very different depending on whether 180 of those citations are supporting it or disputing it, but a standard citation count gives you no way to know which is true. Scite makes that distinction visible. For anyone evaluating a study that’s been in circulation for a few years, this is one of the most substantive checks available.
Retraction Watch — A free database and journalism project that tracks retracted scientific papers across fields, maintained by two science journalists who have been covering research integrity since 2010. Retractions happen for many reasons: honest error, problems with data collection, image manipulation, outright fabrication. The publication that originally covered a study rarely covers its retraction with equal prominence, which means papers get cited and shared long after the underlying research has been formally invalidated. It is the only systematic, publicly searchable record of what has been formally invalidated and why.
Academic Social Networks
Academic publishing has traditionally been a one-way street: researchers submit work, journals publish it, and everyone else either pays to access it or goes without. Social networking platforms built for researchers have created a parallel channel that partially circumvents that model, one where researchers share their own work directly, often including versions of papers that would otherwise sit behind a paywall.
ResearchGate — A free professional network for scientists and researchers where members post their publications, follow each other’s work, and ask questions across disciplines. Because researchers often upload their own papers directly, ResearchGate frequently holds freely accessible versions of studies that are paywalled on the journal’s official site. The platform also allows you to request papers directly from authors, and researchers in active fields often respond (though response rates vary considerably by discipline and how recently the author has been active on the platform). Beyond access, ResearchGate surfaces related work, tracks citations, and gives you a sense of a researcher’s broader output. This can be useful for evaluating whether a single paper represents someone’s sustained area of expertise or a one-off foray into a topic.
Academia.edu — Free, with a paid tier. A platform where academics share papers, follow researchers in adjacent fields, and discover work they might not have found through traditional database searches. Its interface emphasizes discoverability and it’s particularly active in the humanities and social sciences. Like ResearchGate, it’s most valuable as an access route to specific papers or researchers rather than as a starting point for open-ended research.
The Questions That Matter
Academic research isn’t an oracle. It’s a process, and like any process, it can be conducted with rigor or sloppiness, in good faith or shaped entirely by the incentives of whoever wrote the check. The existence of peer review doesn’t change that. Neither does open access, or an impressive journal name, or a researcher’s institutional affiliation, or the number of times a paper has been cited.
Every layer of protection the research system has built has also been gamed at some point. Peer review has passed fraudulent work. High-impact journals have published findings that failed to replicate. Respected researchers have had papers retracted. None of this is a reason for cynicism. It’s a reason to read carefully — and these are the questions that make careful reading possible:
Who funded this, and what did they stand to gain from the outcome?
Who are the researchers, and what financial relationships do they hold?
Who was actually studied, and do those people resemble the population the conclusions are being applied to?
Has the finding been independently reproduced?
What do the authors themselves say their study cannot conclude?
What has happened to this paper in the years since it was published?
Until recently engaging seriously with scientific research required institutional access and specialized training. But the landscape has shifted. Databases that were once available only through universities are now accessible to anyone with a library card. Tools that once required technical expertise now do much of the interpretive work. The barriers are lower than they have ever been — at a moment when the information stakes have never been higher.
Research literacy isn’t about distrust. It’s about knowing enough to engage with evidence on its own terms — to ask the questions that the headline never answers, to find the paper behind the press release, to understand what a finding actually shows and what it doesn’t. The issue was never whether the evidence was available; it was whether anyone was reading it closely enough to matter.

As a practicing engineer for the past 25 or so years I thought I was pretty good at technical research, but this list contains a HUGE number of resources that I was not aware of.
